My two-year fellowship
at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) in New York,
one of the world's leading cancer centers, emphasized the surgeon's
role in the multidisciplinary treatment of cancer. I have worked
with the masters of the field helping patients with complex pancreas,
endocrine, soft tissue, colon, breast, and skin cancers.
My interest in cancer
surgery grew during my medical training. After completing a mathematics
degree at the University of Washington I studied medicine at Oregon
Health and Science University (OHSU). I was drawn to the discipline
of surgery, and was particularly affected by my rotations in cancer
surgery. I found the patients' stories, concerns, triumphs, and
heartbreak inspiring. During my seven years of general surgery
residency at OHSU I chose to do two years of research in surgical
oncology. I continued my training as a surgical oncologist with
my post-residency fellowship at MSKCC.
